Packing Tips

For the people who want to do the packing themselves, that is great! Here are some helpful tips that you may find useful in your packing process. Stratified by room, these helpful hints will make your loading, transit, and unloading experience much simpler. As a rule of thumb, pack the rooms that are used less first and work your way to the most used rooms.

• The Kitchen: Lets start with perhaps the most difficult room, kitchens. This room can be a challenge to pack because it should be packed about a week before the move.
• Pots and pans can be put into medium boxes. Be aware of the weight, however, picking a sturdy box for heavy pots and pans is generally a good idea.
• Breakable items like crystal, glass, china, and ceramics should be wrapped in a clean moving paper to reduce damage. Lining these wrapped objects in moving box labeled “fragile” will help movers or helpers identify which boxes to handle with extra care.
• Silverware can be wrapped in many ways. Taping all the spoons, forks, and knives together, respectively, can make them easy to unpack. Other people may prefer to keep them boxed with extra wrapping paper for added protection.
• When packing smaller appliances like coffee pots, coffee makers, toasters, or microwaves, consider their frangibility and consider packing the delicate items in a “fragile” marked box. Other items can be packed in moving cartons accordingly.
• Living/Family Room
• Furniture like couches and love seats can be wrapped or padded with blankets, or your professional movers can wrap it for you. Pillows can be packed in boxes if desired.
• Entertainment items such as TV’s, gaming consoles, satellite service provider boxes, or CD players are normally packed or wrapped depending on their size. A 72-inch TV, for example should be wrapped thoroughly with bubble wrap and tape or put in its manufactured box. Smaller items can be placed in boxes accordingly with their respective remotes.
• Bedrooms
• Here is the perfect opportunity to let the kids (if you have them) help with the packing process. Delegating small tasks to your kiddos can help remove some of the minute details that you may not remember down the road.
• Clothing can be a tricky one. Clothing bags and cartons are a lifesaver for those who have their clothes on a hanger. Clothing cartons allow you to keep clothes on the hangers instead of taking them off the hanger and folding them into a box.
• Jewelry should remain in your care throughout the moving process. Do not pack away your valuable jewels, watches, collections, etc. into the regular household moving boxes. Determine a safe method of transporting your jewelry to your new destination such as in your personal care or through an armored car delivery service.
• Mattress packing is most effectively done with a mattress bag or mattress carton. This will ensure that the mattress stays clean throughout transit.
• Rugs are best packed when they are rolled up into a spiral. Getting your rug professionally cleaned is great before a move, the cleaner will return your rug cleaned and rolled.
